One of the big issues is that google crawls the web and pulls the content of the news stories, or snippets about who Sean Connery was. Then, when you search for Sean Connery, google doesn’t just give you the link to the website to go read about Sean Connery. It actually takes the content and puts it in a nicely formatted pane inline with the search results. So now you don’t need to click the link at all to find out what you wanted to know.

This means the originating website won’t get any traffic and can’t show ads or ask for money with a paywall, or whatever.

They could block google from crawling their site, but then their page won’t show up in search results at all, and they still probably won’t get any traffic.
